One of Southampton's most underrated players Steven Davis was, this week, rewarded for his solid and professional performances with a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2018.

The Northern Ireland captain joined the club in 2012 following Rangers' administration problems and he has been a key figure in and around the Saints' starting line-up ever since.

Although not the most prolific goalscorer or tough tackling player at the club, the midfielder's qualities are often overlooked for the more headline grabbing performances, but without Davis in their team, Southampton do not hold the same balance or fluidity.

Technically brilliant

One thing that Ronald Koeman and Mauricio Pochettino before him are sure to have seen is that everything Davis does is full of quality and his technical ability is second-to-none.

It is somewhat of a surprise when the 29-year-old gives the ball away, such is his calmness in possession and that offers so much comfort and confidence to his teammates that they can give him the ball in any situation.

Although somewhat unnoticed, the Southampton fans have grown to realise that if the former Aston Villa and Fulham man is not in their team, the balance of the side is definitely reduced.

A natural link between the deeper members of the midfield and the forward line, Davis adds something to both sections of the pitch, making him a crucial component of the side.

100% commitment

Another thing that has endeared Davis to the Southampton faithful is his commitment and energy. There is no such thing as a lost cause for their number eight and his tireless running creates space for his colleagues to exploit as well as giving opponents no time to relax.

There is no doubt that every team needs a player who will work hard chasing down the opposition for 90 minutes, and for Southampton, Davis is that man.

That is not to take anything away from the midfielder though, because it would be unfair to list him solely as a work-horse as his technical ability is just as impressive as his work-rate, something that is definitely a commodity in the modern game.

When Davis joined the Saints from Rangers in 2012, there was an air of uncertainty at what he would bring to the team. Having been in the starting 11 for the majority and amassing over 80 appearances since, he has now been rewarded for his energy and ability with a richly deserved deal to tie him to the club for the next four years.
