Adrian Neville defeated Bo Dallas at NXT: Arrival earlier this year to become the NXT Champion and since then he has managed to retain his gold against some of the toughest contenders in developmental.

The likes of Brodus Clay and Titus O’Neil have tried and failed to dethrone the 28-year-old whilst he has also put on some epic battle with the likes of Tyson Kidd, Tyler Breeze and Sami Zayn.

Although Neville is a fantastic champion, there’s no hiding away from the fact that Neville will have to drop the NXT Championship soon if he is to make that all-important jump to the main roster, which he is more than ready for.

There is a lot of good talent on NXT who are improving week by week; but not all of them are ready to hold the championship just yet, such as Mojo Rawley and Bull Dempsey.

On the other hand, there are certain superstars that perhaps don’t need to hold the NXT Championship, Finn Balor and Hideo Itami being the two stand out names who in reality should be on the main roster as soon as possible, but will spend some in NXT and if that is the case, they will be huge threats to Neville’s NXT Championship.

But when Neville does drop the gold, it needs to be against someone who is worthy and ready to hold the gold for a long time. Here are the five superstars I believe could be the stars to hold the championship.

Hideo Itami

He does belong on the main roster, and he could be a massive hit on the main roster as well, but the only thing holding him back is his ability to speak English. We can understand him but if he is champion he’ll need to talk a lot more which means his English will need to improve.

He’s probably one of the best wrestlers in the WWE, let alone NXT so he is ready for the NXT Championship; the only question is whether Hideo Itami is too big for NXT and will need a main roster push as soon as possible.

Tyson Kidd

Tyson Kidd has proven himself to his doubters, on the main roster he was being held back by certain superstars that cannot even wrestle. Kidd is perhaps the most underrated wrestler in the WWE and he has proven to be one of the best heels in the business today. He’s been a thorn in Neville and Zayn’s side since he arrived and his wresting ability speaks for itself.

The only reason I believe Tyson won’t be able to hold the NXT Championship is because he’s actually a main roster superstar, he is improving every single week into one of the finest superstars but the championship could be reserved for the NXT superstars that haven’t been on the main roster. If Kidd is able to hold it then he could be the next champion, but much like Itami he could be too big for the brand.

Tyler Breeze

Tyler Breeze was a superstar on the rise a number of months ago and was tipped to capture the NXT Championship after he defeated Sami Zayn to become the number one contender to Neville’s championship and obviously failing to dethrone him. But even though he hasn’t capitalise don his many opportunities, he is a star who plays his gimmick perfectly and would make for a great heel champion.

There has been talk of calling Breeze up to the main roster to work under, or alongside The Miz which would also be very beneficial to him, but if he needs to stay on NXT to hone his skills a little more, then he should be in with a shout of capturing the NXT Championship; he is more than ready.

Sami Zayn

Perhaps the most obvious name on the list, Sami Zayn. He’s often referred to as ‘the nearly man’ as he has come so close to becoming the champion multiple times and just like Breeze, he has failed. Zayn mentioned last week on NXT that he is targeting the gold now and if he is to lure Neville into the ring one more time, this could be his best chance yet to defeat him.

NXT fans know Sami Zayn is more than ready for the gold and would be a fantastic champion, it just depends on whether they want another massive fan favourite to become the champion, or whether it’s time for a heel superstar to become champion.

Baron Corbin

An odd entry for someone who has the potential to be a huge superstar, not only on NXT but on the main roster as well. He has had a huge impact on NXT with countless dominating victories. He has a great look, a brilliant finishing manoeuvre and as each week passes by he will be over with the fans a lot more and we will hopefully see more of his move set.

He shouldn’t be rushed into the title picture, but within a year or even sooner than that as it could backfire. He should be placed in a great opening feud followed by a top feud with a big name, if he can come through the other end as impressive as he is now, a championship might be on the horizon.
