When the Orlando Magic drafted Aaron Gordon with the 4th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, they knew exactly what they would be getting.
The former Arizona Wildcats star is a physical freak and is one of the most athletically gifted players to be drafted in years. The power forward shocked everyone at the Combine when he jumped so high on the max vert test that the officials had to raise the bar as he ripped off a 39 inch vert.
And now the youngest player in the NBA is earning rave reviews, being compared to the man who finished 3rd in the MVP voting behind Kevin Durant and LeBron James.
The New Blake
Yes, according to reports from Basketball Insiders, the precocious Gordon seriously has a chance to become the new incarnation of Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin.
“When Blake Griffin entered the league, many considered him to be more of a freak athlete than complete NBA player. But over time Griffin developed a better feel for the game, along with improving his shooting and other skills, which has turned him into a legitimate MVP type of player,” Jesse Blancarte explained.
"I too think Gordon could end up being the top player from this year’s draft" - Jesse Blancarte, Basketball Insiders.
“Rookies tend to struggle with consistency over the long 82 game season, and I expect Gordon will too. But like Griffin, Gordon is a hard worker and I expect his game will improve quickly. I too think Gordon could end up being the top player from this year’s draft, but for now I have guys like Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, Marcus Smart and Julius Randle ahead of him in terms of the impact they can have this season,” he added.
Whilst it will be a struggle at the start for him to find enough playing time in an Orlando team that is forward heavy, and for him to really learn how to shoot. But he will have a rookie teammate with him in point guard Elfrid Payton that could be very beneficial as the two grow together.
The Magic won't be great this year and will really struggle to make the playoffs, but Gordon and Payton should be fun to watch, potentially creating their own Lob City down in Orlando. Watch out Blake, because Aaron Gordon is coming for your title as the league's most powerful dunker.
