Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has teased Blues fans with the prospect of Diego Costa returning from injury and illness to lead the line against Manchester United on Sunday, after revealing he trained for the first time this week on Friday morning.

Costa missed last weekend's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend with a persistent hamstring problem and also spent the night in hospital with a virus early this week, but he was well enough to take part in an individual session at Chelsea's Cobham training ground earlier today.

Mourinho told reporters at his pre-match press conference that Costa has a "little chance" of being fit to feature at Old Trafford, but Loic Remy has been ruled out and is facing a fortnight on the sidelines with a groin injury.

Chelsea could also have experienced midfield duo Ramires and Jon Obi Mikel available, but it's the question marks surrounding Costa's long-term fitness that will dominate the build-up to a titanic Premier League tussle on Sunday afternoon.

The Brazilian-born forward has made a blistering start to life in West London despite being plagued by constant injury niggles, with nine goals in just seven Premier League appearances.

Mourinho faces huge selection dilemma

The Blues boss is probably more inclined to take a chance on Costa now that Remy is definitely ruled out, with scan results showing damage that's likely to keep the French marksman out until after the next international break.

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba is the only striker Mourinho can definitely count upon ahead of a showdown at the Theatre of Dreams, but even the Ivorian veteran's workload in terms of training has been minimal over the last month.

Gamble worth taking?

Mourinho revealed earlier today that Costa's bid to finally full fitness has not been helped by an unexpected trip to hospital before Tuesday's Champions League clash with Maribor, taking his recovery process out of the hands of Chelsea medical staff for a short time.

The 26-year-old got a clean bill of health on that front, which means the feared forward now has just under 48 hours to show Mourinho that he's ready for the rigours of as bruising 90 minutes against Man United as the Blues look to extend their unbeaten record and advantage at the top of the Premie League table.
