United welcome the Blues to Manchester with Jose Mourinho's side sitting top of the Premier League table, five points clear of rivals Manchester City.
United meanwhile are down in sixth place, with 12 points from their first eight Premier League games under new boss van Gaal. The Dutchman will be without Wayne Rooney, although that does not guarantee that Radamel Falcao will play.
In the 2-2 draw against West Brom, van Gaal surprised by playing Robin van Persie down the middle on his own, flanked by Di Maria and Adnan Januzaj with Juan Mata in behind.
Januzaj, who was valued at £40m earlier this year, did little to keep his place and should be removed from the starting eleven to face Chelsea, and if van Gaal is feeling bold he'll partner Falcao with Van Persie.

As for Mourinho's side, the Chelsea boss remained coy over the fitness of Diego Costa. The Spain international missed the Champions League game in mid-week, but has spent time in hospital recovering from a virus.
Costa reportedly as a 'little chance' to play, and with Loic Remy out Mourinho has two options - play Didier Drogba or use an unorthodox forward like Andre Schurrle or Cesc Fabregas through the middle.
The last time Chelsea visited Manchester United in the Premier League, Mourinho came to town with one thing in mind - to avoid defeat.
He played Schurrle as a false forward and the Blues earned a gritty 0-0 draw. But United were not great last season, finishing seventh, and Mourinho was criticised for being overly negative.
The Old Trafford giants have definitely upgraded their attacking options this season, but concerns remain over their defence. United have conceded 12 goals this season - the same amount as Aston Villa and more than West Brom, Stoke and only one less than 19th placed Burnley.
So, what lineups will van Gaal and Mourinho go with?
Here are GiveMeSport's predictions…
De Gea, Rojo, Shaw, Jones, Rafael, Blind, Di Maria, Mata, Carrick, Falcao, Van Persie
Courtois, Ivanovic, Luis, Terry, Cahill, Matic, Fabregas, Ramires, Schurrle, Oscar, Hazard
