The Brazilian full-back has less than two years remaining on his current £60,000-a-week deal, and is eager to secure his long-term future with the Premier League giants.
However, Louis van Gaal is yet to be fully convinced by the 24-year-old, and is certainly in no rush to open negotiations with the defensive liability over an extension.
And, with Dani Alves linked with a possible move to Manchester United next summer, it remains to be seen whether the Dutch coach views Rafael as his long-term solution at right-back.
The South American has made over 100 first-team appearances for the Red Devils, but faces a make-or-break season to prove his worth to Van Gaal moving forward.
