Manchester United scouts were in attendance as Rennes ran out 2-1 winners against Marseille in last night's Coupe de la Ligue clash at Stade de la Route de Lorient.
The Red Devils' presence at Wednesday night's match was confirmed by the visitors' official Twitter account, who also revealed representatives from Bordeaux, Lorient, Caen and Le Havre were taking in the encounter between the two French top-flight sides.
Speculation was rife on social media as to the identity of players the Premier League giants were in fact keeping a close eye on, with a number of possible options that could be targeted when the transfer window reopens in January.
Louis van Gaal might have spent more than £150 million on six new players at Old Trafford over the summer, but the Dutch coach is expected to re-enter the market again at the turn of the year, in an attempt to further strengthen his squad for the second half of the 2014/15 campaign.
Given Manchester United's array of attacking talent, it would be fair to assume that the club's mid-season reinforcements are likely to be more defensive minded players, with the centre-back position still a particular area of weakness.

Marcos Rojo has proved unconvincing at the heart of the back four, while Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans appear unable to fully make their presences felt as permanent fixtures in the first-team.
The summer departures of key stars like Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra has left the Red Devils without a really commanding figure to marshal the back line. It's a problem that the former Netherlands boss will be looking to address, but judging by the number of different rumours doing the rounds, don't be surprised to see a few more arrivals in Manchester in January.
With that in mind, GiveMeSport has picked five possible stars from last night's line-ups that might be on Van Gaal's radar.
