If City need proof that an ex-player can lead a club to greatness without any real managerial experience then Guardiola is the shining example.
Since taking the reigns at Barcelona in 2008, and subsequently joining Bayern Munich in 2013 the Spaniard has won a league title in all but one of his seasons as a manager.
On top of that, he's twice got his hands on the one thing City's board crave - the Champions League.
Though still under contract at Bayern, the way he announced four years at his beloved Barca was enough for him suggests he has little intention of spending his entire career in Germany.
Luring Guardiola to Manchester would be quite some coup, but if City could do it they'd automatically increase their chances of adding European success to the two Premier League titles they've won.
