Manchester United predicted XI to face Crystal Palace

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal's selection dilemma ahead of this weekend's Premier League clash with Crystal Palace is there for all to see, who will step in at centre-back with Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo both sidelined.

Smalling is suspended following his double dose of madness in last Sunday's Manchester derby, while Rojo has no chance of featuring against Palace after damaging his shoulder in the same 1-0 defeat.

Michael Carrick and Paddy McNair finished as an unlikely centre-back at the Etihad last weekend, but Van Gaal must now decide if he'll stick with that mix of youth and experience in search of three precious points before the international break.

Carrick back at Old Trafford for first start of the season

Van Gaal is widely expected to hand Carrick his first start of the season this weekend, although not in his preferred position.

The 33-year-old is finally over an ankle problem and with Phil Jones and Jonny Evans still out will be called upon to provide much-needed experience to the Red Devils rearguard, alongside either McNair or another youngster Van Gaa trusts in Tyler Blackett.

Will Van Gaal give chance to James Wilson?

Van Gaal is reportedly giving serious consideration to dropping star striker Robin van Persie favour of James Wilson, a young forward scoring goals for fun in the reserves that he clearly rates very highly.

Wilson would have a huge job on his hands to lead the line just ahead of club captain Wayne Rooney though, which means the 18-year-old may just have to wait a little longer for his first start of the season despite Van Persie failing to convince against City last week.

There's also the looming question over another striker with a six-figure salary in Radamel Falcao. The Colombian striker was sorely missed as United failed to beat Chelsea or Man City, but it would be a risky move to thrown him back in from the start against Palace.

Herrera fighting for a recall

Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Daley Blind look shoe-ins to keep their places tomorrow afternoon, but Van Gaal has more pressing selection dilemmas elsewhere including potential returns for Ander Herrera and Juan Mata.

Herrera's rib injury has allowed Marouane Fellaini to remind United fans he has plenty to offer thanks to his imposing physical presence in central midfield, which could come in handy against a side in Palace who like to mix it in central midfield.

Mata meanwhile was dropped for the Manchester derby in favour of Adnan Januzaj, but Smalling's red card robbed him of the chance to shine and as a result the £37.1m star may just earn a recall.
