Ukrainian referee gets punched in the face for awarding a penalty

Amateur football in Ukrainian is not usually the place the discerning European football fan goes looking for their fix of the beautiful game and a recent incident where a referee was the victim of a shocking assault might explain it in some way.

It was the Rivne Supercup in Ukraine where, apparently, players from a side called FC Mayak were not best pleased that the referee had awarded a penalty to their rivals on the day, the named of which we are unaware of.

Substitutes appear to stream onto the field as the action turns a little nasty, with protestations at the decision reaching a shocking crescendo in the form of one sub who decides that the only course of action left to him is to punch the referee in the face.

It really is a brutal blow to the man in yellow and he crumples to the ground from the force of the attack, though it doesn't look as though he has been knocked out. To his credit, he gets straight and appears to look ready to brandish a card.

However, the assailant looks like he walks off the pitch and the referee is unable to show him the card. This individual may have escaped a sending off, but it's probably quite likely that he is set for more than a three-match ban once the authorities take a look at this video evidence - which you can watch here…

It really is a shocking sight and the idiot throwing the punch probably should never be allowed near a competitive football match ever again. Getting THAT annoyed about football is just not cool.
