The WWE Divas division has probably had one of its best years in 2014, which is why it comes as such a surprise that the company seem to be contacting former divas to make a return.
This year has seen the divas play a bigger role in Pay-per-views, Stephanie and Brie Bella closed an episode of Raw back in August for the first time in over a decade and then went on to have one of the most over-hyped divas matches in recent memory at SummerSlam.
As well as this, Total Divas has been renewed for a third season on the E! Network and continues to bring in high ratings. So it all looks like plain sailing for the women of WWE, right?
With the rumours that AJ Lee is set to depart arising again, it looks like WWE are trying to make sure they have cover for the longest reigning divas champion, just in case she decides to depart the company in the same way her husband did.
AJ is currently still advertised for WWE live events until TLC in mid-December so looking at the current calendar it seems she will be dropping her title to Nikki Bella on Sunday before the rematch would see Nikki v Brie v AJ at TLC and then the Nikki vs Brie feud can continue around the two sisters if AJ did leave.
Not only this, WWE applied for the copyright of Eve Torres' name early last week and this seems to be the main fuel behind the rumours of the former Divas Champions return. Whilst the former longest reigning Divas Champion Maryse also looks like she is set for a return after her husband, current WWE Superstar the Miz mentioned her on social media:
“Maryse & my relationship hasn't been on TV yet we are ranked as a WWE power couple Keep voting & maybe ull see #MarMiz”
And the former champion has also bleached her hair back to the platinum blonde she used to be famous for in WWE, giving aid to more rumours.
Not only are Eve and Maryse being rumoured to be returning, but former TNA Knockout Champion, Five time women's champion and one time divas champion Mickie James has been hinting on Twitter for a while that she could be set for a return but hasn't yet put a time scale on it.
For the divas division to go from how poor it was when Melina and Mickie first left around four years ago, to how it is now in such a short period is a testament to how talented some of the current divas are.
With the likes of Paige and Emma coming through from NXT this year and Sasha Banks and Charlotte set to come up next year; the future is looking rather bright for the women of wrestling.
