Brad Jones falls asleep on bench during Liverpool defeat

Liverpool were condemned to yet another Premier League defeat, their third in succession, as bogey-side Crystal Palace struck a damaging blow once again with a 3-1 victory at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon.

It was, at times, a breathless encounter in south London as Yannick Bolasie terrorised the Liverpool defence but, it would appear, there was not enough action to keep the attention of Brad Jones.

The Liverpool goalkeeper was in his accustomed position on Brendan Rodgers’ bench when the TV cameras appeared to catch the Australian catching 40 winks after compatriot Mile Jedinak had fired in a beauty of a free-kick.

Fortunately for Jones he was stationed behind Rodgers, so the Liverpool manager would not have caught a glimpse of the ‘keeper in his slumber, although he may be in for a reprimand once the footage is studied.

Rodgers will, however, first have more pressing concerns to attend to following this loss, with his side’s inability to defend effectively an issue that immediately needs addressing.

Liverpool had opened the scoring through Rickie Lambert, in for the injured Mario Balotelli, but Dwight Gayle was able to get Palace back on terms after a shot from Bolasie had struck Simon Mignolet’s post.

Bolasie continued to cause problems for Liverpool on both flanks and later got further reward for his endeavour when he squared for Joe Ledley to slide through the legs of Mignolet to move the hosts into the lead.

The goal to complete the scoring came from Jedinak who curled a sumptuous set-piece over the wall and into the top corner. Three points moved Neil Warnock’s side out of the relegation zone and just two points behind Liverpool.
