Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne capped a superb week with the equaliser for the Saints against Aston Villa.
The 23-year-old made his England debut during last weeks international break and his superb form continued as he smashed home with nine minutes remaining to earn the Saints a point against a gritty Aston Villa side.
Gabriel Agbonlahor had put the home side ahead after an uncharacteristic mistake from Fraser Forster saw him race out of his box only for Agbonlahor to beat him to the ball and roll into the unguarded net.
Ronald Koeman chose to start with Shane Long taking the place of the injured Steven Davis for the match at Villa park and Southampton started the game with the majority of the ball. However they were unable to create any major openings against a makeshift Villa defence.
They were punished on the half-hour mark too, when Agbonlahor latched on to a hopeful ball forward. The Villa striker beating the advancing Forster to the ball and after knocking it past the keeper, he rolled into the empty net to give the hosts the lead.
Southampton nearly got back into the game as Dusan Tadic found Sadio Mane but his curled effort from the edge of the box was well pushed round the post by Brad Guzan.
Clyne to the rescue
The second half followed the same pattern as the first with the visitors in total control of possession without creating too many chances.
Jose Fonte squared across the six-yard box but was not able to find a teammate before Andreas Weimann fired over from six yards from Villa's only real chance of the second half.
The equaliser came for the Saints with just nine minutes to play after good work down the left from Ryan Bertrand. The on-loan Chelsea defender made space down the left before cutting the ball back across the box for the en-rushing Clyne to side-foot home a powerful effort.
The goal gave the Saints a point on a night they didn't really get going but one they vitally needed ahead of the visit of Manchester City on Sunday.
