Liverpool should target these three players in January

Liverpool have under-performed to say the least so far this season, recruits brought in by Brendan Rodgers in the summer haven't come good as of yet. So who can the Welshman sign in the January transfer window?

Of course, the Reds have struggled upfront so far, the £16 million signing Mario Balotelli is yet to score in the Premier League and Rickie Lambert hasn't really got a look in. The departure of Luis Suarez caused a lot of debate between fans, should Rodgers bring in another world-class player that would take up the majority of the money? Or should he invest in squad players?

Rodgers opted for the latter and that may be the crucial mistake. Liverpool needed another world beater, but they could try and find that player in January. Nevertheless, they are more than likely going to have to scout a hidden talent that is yet to catch the eye of other teams.

Olympique Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette is a brilliant young striker, the Frenchman has scored 11 goals in 14 matches in Ligue 1, supplying four goals for other teammates in the process. Lacazette could be a fantastic signing for any team and if Liverpool get in there first, they may well find that gem they so desperately need and at 23-years-old, he would be an investment in the future. However, he may be a bit on the expensive side, Lyon would be reluctant to sell the Frenchman considering his recent performances, although, a fee in the region of £20 million may tempt the Ligue 1 side to sell.

Memphis Depay

Another position the Reds need strengthening in is the left-midfield role. Memphis Depay is being hunted down by many sides, Manchester United and Real Madrid are both rumoured to be interested in the Dutchman, however, Liverpool could offer him a regular first team place, unlike the aforementioned teams. Depay is set to become a world-class player and has even been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo, whereas these comparisons may be a little over the top, Depay still has plenty of talent.

He has scored seven goals in nine games in the Eredevise for PSV, people will say the Dutch league isn't the most challenging division in the world, but the stats are still pretty impressive. Again, he won't come cheaply, with other teams willing to spend big for him, Liverpool would have to dish out a large amount of money, a fee in the region of £25 million may fend off their rivals and lure the Dutchman to Merseyside.

Bernd Leno

Last but not least, Liverpool have struggled to keep the opposition from scoring so far this season, many people are blaming the back-four for this, whereas this may be true, the recent signings of Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno would probably mean Rodgers won't invest in anymore defenders any time soon. So, that brings us to the last line of defence, the goalkeeper.

Simon Mignolet was only brought in at the start of last season and done pretty well, but this season he is struggling to keep the ball out of the net, so a replacement may well be in the managers mind. Bernd Leno is rumoured to be the next Manuel Neuer and at 22-years-old, he is another future star.

The German has kept five clean sheets in 12 matches in a flourishing Bayern Leverkusen side this season, making 30 saves in the process. He is among the most talented keepers in world football already and many people reckon he will be the best number one in the world in the near future. Like Memphis Depay, Leno isn't short of pursuers, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are among the contenders, but if Liverpool offer Leverkusen a large sum of money, they may well get his signature, a fee in the region of £25 million would probably be enough.

All the aforementioned possible signings are realistic ones and wouldn't exactly break the Liverpool bank, Rodgers desperately needs to give the fans something to get excited about and any of them players would certainly lift the spirit at Anfield. Getting the signature of those players, however, is easier said than done.
