Manchester United midfielder Angel di Maria believes playing with Wayne Rooney is similar to lining-up alongside his Argentina international teammate Lionel Messi.

The 26-year-old hailed Rooney in a revealing interview with the Daily Mail - and feels that he already possesses an on-pitch understanding with the England international which is similar to his connection with both Messi and his former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Rooney is at the top level," said Di Maria. "The other day I was talking to my friend and I said, 'Rooney and me understand each other, just like Messi and me in the Argentina squad, or Cristiano at Real Madrid.’”

The South American added: “I get on really well with Rooney, we get together on the pitch to kick the ball about, to do things.

"He’s a spectacular player and he’s one of the top players in the game."

United fans waiting to see best of Di Maria

Di Maria and Rooney have linked up to good effect on several occasions this season, including in the Red Devils’ recent 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, where Rooney scored thanks to an assist from his £60 million teammate.

Di Maria has enjoyed a decent start to life at Old Trafford, scoring three goals in his first nine appearances for the Premier League giants.

However, this is a player capable of establishing his status as the Premier League’s best player, and Manchester United supporters are still waiting to see the very best of the most expensive player in British football history.
