Manchester United players making fun of Anderson's fitness

Manchester United midfielder Anderson is so out go shape that other players at Old Trafford have been making fun of him about his big appetite and eating habits.

It has got so bad for the Brazilian that manager Louis van Gaal even went so far as to publicly say he was not fit enough to perform at the requisite level of a Premier League footballer, though it was qualified with the fact that injuries had been a problem for him.

However, the Daily Mail report points out that Anderson’s fitness has become something of a dressing room joke and he fellow players making the most of it to use him as the butt of his jokes. This is no new thing for the man signed from Porto in 2007, as he has been ridiculed for his weight numerous times over the past few years.

The 26-year-old, whose signing seven years ago was part of a £30million double swoop with Nani, was famously the butt of a video from former Manchester United teammates Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra where the pair snuck up on him on a flight and caught him eating crisps in the dark.

Sadly, the video has been taken down and so we are unable to relive the comedy - we wouldn’t be surprised if it was Anderson that had it taken down.

Behind all the joking about his physique, it is a disappointing story of a very talented young player wasting that talent because of an ability to live as a professional. However, his £60,000-a-week wages probably go some way to assuaging the disappointment.

"I can’t pick him now because you have to be fit"

It looks as though Anderson’s career is almost certainly over and club officials, according to the report, would be willing to write off a transfer fee if he leaves the club in January before his contract expires in the summer.

Those £60,000-a-week wages keeping his crisp supplies well stocked are proving to be the problem behind any possible deal happening with potential suitors in his native Brazil, so a summer free transfer looks all the more likely.

Fitness Challenge

Van Gaal laid down the gauntlet to Anderson with his recent comments, insisting he was not able to pick him at the moment if he did not show he can bring his fitness levels into line and maintain them.

“I can’t pick him now because you have to be fit. For the first three months the culture of a trainer is fitness,” said the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager.

“That is the smallest thing you can demand. Professional league fitness. Fitness is the most important thing. First you have to show your fitness. Not for just one day but for several weeks.”
