AS Roma are ready to make a January move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Vlad Chiriches, with Rudi Garcia keen on strengthening his back-four, reports the Metro.

Garcia's side are currently second in the Serie A, only behind champions Juventus, but after 13 games they find themselves three points behind their main-title rivals.

Roma have won 10 of their 13 games, losing just two and conceding only nine goals, but Garcia is still interested in adding more defensive options to his squad with Chiriches high on his list.

Garcia's want for defenders heated up after he saw his side get thrashed 7-1 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League in Rome, and he is reportedly ready to make a loan move for 25-year-old Romanian international.

North London Career

Chiriches arrived at White Hart Lane in the Summer of 2013, when the club spent over £100million on transfers, but since arriving, he has only made 21 league appearances under Andre Villas-Boas, Tim Sherwood and new manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

Since the former-Southampton boss took over, Chiriches has only made seven Premier League appearances, and was poor midweek against Chelsea during their 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

According to reports, Roma are keen on signing the centre-back on a loan-deal in January, before making it a permanent move in the summer if he impresses during his time there.

It's believed that Garcia is willing to spend around £8m on the defender.

Competition for Signing

If reports are to be believed however, Roma will face competition for Chiriches as it's thought that Spurs' rivals Arsenal are considering a shock loan-move in January.

Arsene Wenger is low on defensive numbers due to injuries, and Chiriches is one of few names on the Frenchman's wishlist.
