There's just no way Robin van Persie's remarkable World Cup goal against the then holders Spain wasn't going to make our list of memorable sporting moments from 2014.

The Manchester United striker produced arguably the goal of the tournament as he stunned Spain with a header that sent fans around the world into disbelief.

Magical moment

With the Netherlands 1-0 down against a Spanish side boasting the likes of Diego Costa, Sergio Ramos and Co., a moment of genius was clearly needed. Well, in Van Persie, Louis van Gaal and the rest of the Dutch got just that.

It was a long ball from Van Persie's now Manchester United teammate Daley Blind that he got on the end of as he leaped through the air to send the ball over veteran Iker Casillas. It was pure genius.

In fact, they were to be treated to one of the greatest nights in their history as the Dutch went on the rampage to secure a remarkable 5-1 victory over their counterparts.

Disaster for Spain

Spain, though, never quite recovered from the disastrous defeat as they crashed out at the group stages of the competition after only being able to secure one victory which came against Australia. After three tournament successes in a row, the Spaniards finally came crashing down in Brazil. The dominant period was over.

Van Gaal's side enjoyed quite the run, with it ultimately ending in victory as they beat hosts Brazil to claim third place in the World Cup.
