Frank Lampard sparks greatest midfielder debate with 175th Premier League goal

Frank Lampard reached another Premier League milestone this weekend when scoring his 175th goal in the English top flight.

The Manchester City midfielder was let go by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in the summer, and has agreed to make an MLS move to New York.

Mourinho's mistake?

However, a loan deal with the Citizens has seen the 36-year-old extend his spell in the Premier League, and he certainly hasn’t looked out of place in Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

And, if there was any doubt about his importance for Manchester City, then today he proved it with the winner in a 1-0 win over Leicester City in an uninspiring clash at the King Power Stadium.

His goal moves him to joint-fourth on the all-time EPL goalscorer list alongside Thierry Henry, with just Wayne Rooney (178), Andy Cole (187) and Alan Shearer (260) ahead of him.

Lampard started his career at West Ham, but became a legend for Chelsea during his stint at Stamford Bridge. As well as domestic titles, he enjoyed European glory in both the Champions League and Europa League.

In his post-match interview, Lampard said: "I'm very happy with [the record], I thought it was going to be out of my reach.

"I have respect for Thierry Henry, he is one of the greatest in Premier League history and to be up there with him his incredible.”

Today’s goal has again sparked debate over who is the best English midfielder in the Premier League era - Lampard, Steven Gerrard or Paul Scholes.

Lampard vs Gerrard vs Scholes

If it’s down to goals, then Lampard is head and shoulders above the rest. However, both he and Gerrard have taken penalties throughout their career - something Scholes never did.

An inability to tackle has often been thrown in the direction of Scholes when talking about his qualities, although European greats like Xavi have often highlighted the player as the most technically gifted.

Gerrard does not have the Premier League winners medal his rivals do, but he did drive Liverpool to Champions League glory and, in his prime, could do it all.

So who do you think is the best in the business? Would you pick Lampard, Scholes or Gerrard in your dream team?
