Liverpool consider record offer for Karim Benzema

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is considering a club-record £50 million bid for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, reports The Express.

Daniel Sturridge's continued injury troubles coupled with disappointing form from Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert has led to a goal-scoring crisis at Anfield this season. So far their top scorer is Steven Gerrard with three in the Premier League, tied with Raheem Sterling.

Recent games, including the 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, saw Sterling play upfront in what is a makeshift role for the winger. He failed to impress against an inspired David de Gea in a game that could have been so different if he had taken his chances.

Injury problems

Sturridge has managed to feature in just three league games this season and is not expected to return before the end of the year. Instead, Sturridge will spend Christmas in America where he will take advantage of the Boston Red Sox's state of the art medical facilities to boost his recovery.

Sterling did score two goals against Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup, but he is not expected to be a long-term solution to Liverpool's woes up front. Instead, Rodgers is plotting a sensational bid for Benzema, who could be available in the January transfer window.

Record signing

Benzema recently signed a new contract with Real Madrid, but it has always been reported that Florentino Perez would allow the Frenchman to leave for the right price. That price currently stands at £50 million, which would be enough to break Liverpool's transfer record; their £35 million deal for Andy Carroll.

Real Madrid are looking to raise funds to sign both Sergio Aguero and Marco Reus in the upcoming transfer windows. Like Mesut Ozil and Angel di Maria before him, Benzema looks set to be shoved out of the Bernabeu exit door as a result.

Madrid ready to sell

Spanish journalist Manuel Esteban is quoted in the same report as saying: "Benzema is on thin ice. If they receive a big bid, they will not be hesitant."

"The dream is to combine Kun Aguero, Marco Reus and Cristiano Ronaldo, who would become the best front line in the world of football."
