Manchester United are confident of securing three signings in January worth a combined £80 million. Benfica duo Enzo Perez and Nicolas Gaitan could both arrive at Old Trafford, along with AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, it has emerged.

This latest report comes courtesy of the Daily Star, who understand that United are optimistic that all three players will arrive when the transfer window re-opens in the New Year.

Reports from Portugal last week claimed United were close to signing Argentina internationals Perez and Gaitan for a combined £50 million fee, while it’s understood that Strootman could secure a move to the 20-time English champions in a deal worth around £30 million.

Van Gaal a huge Strootman fan

United’s hopes of signing Strootman were boosted earlier this month by local rivals Manchester City, who helped eliminate Roma from the Champions League group stages.

Had Roma advanced to the latter stages of Europe’s premier club competition, Strootman would have stayed put at the Stadio Olimpico until the end of the season. But the situation has changed following the Italian club’s 2-0 defeat to Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

United boss Louis van Gaal is a huge fan of Strootman and knows, provided he has made a full recovery from his serious knee, this is a player with the ability to slot straight into the Red Devils’ midfield and make an impact.

Scouts watching Perez and Gaitan

Van Gaal has instructed scouts to continue watching midfielder Perez and winger Gaitan, but both players are expected to receive offers from Manchester United over the coming weeks.
