Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney sent a message to fans on his official Facebook page on Christmas Day.

The England and United captain released a photograph with his wife and children as he wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

Rooney, much like the rest of his Red Devils teammates, was handed the day off yesterday despite the club being in action against Newcastle United later today.

Merry Christmas

And the striker certainly appeared to enjoy the day with his family as on his official Facebook page, he said:

"Merry Christmas everyone! Enjoying my day with the family. Hope you all have a great day!"

With Christmas out of the way, Rooney will now be eyeing goals as his side are back at Old Trafford this afternoon.

Louis van Gaal's side head into the game in fine form after securing six wins from their last seven fixtures.

After being held at Villa Park in their last outing, however, United will be desperate to return to winning ways against Alan Pardew's inconsistent side

Rooney, then, looks set to start, but may once again star in the midfield department, with the likes of Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao, James Wilson and Co. all hoping for a place in the side.

With United also set to play Tottenham on Sunday, it looks set to be a busy couple of days for the club as they look to build momentum heading into the New Year.
