Manchester City confident of signing Lionel Messi in £200m deal

Manchester City remain confident of landing Lionel Messi ahead of Chelsea, and are willing to spend £200 million to do so.

City confident

The Daily Star carries sensational reports which suggest Manuel Pellegrini has his eye firmly fixed on the Nou Camp talisman despite the fact that it would take wages of around £500,000-a-week to convince him to leave Barcelona.

The same report suggests that Chelsea have retained an interest in Messi, regardless of Jose Mourinho’s insistence last week that it would be impossible for the Blues to sign him.

No Chelsea deal

It’s believed City, who have ongoing problems with ensuring they comply with Financial Fair Play rules, have tried to sign Messi in the past, and with chiefs Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain having both worked with the player during their time in Spain.

Even though City can’t use the financial muscle they would have been able to prior to the introduction of the aforementioned FFP rules their pockets still run deep, although the prospect of a Messi-to-the-Premier-League-move is still highly unlikely.
