Caroline Wozniacki comes back to haunt Rory McIlroy

Almost a year ago to the day, the sporting world - or those who cared - were busying raising a glass to the new power couple. Golfer Rory McIlroy had proposed to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki; all seemed well.

However, fast forward to present day and there has been no glitzy, showcase wedding and McIlWoz is no more. I'm not sure anybody called them McIlWoz, but hey ho - they should have.

Since the Northern Irishman called their wedding off, having already sent the wedding invites out, the pair have managed to move-on in their respective sports - after an initial period of slight bitterness of course.

They may be doing well for themselves, but reminders of their very public relationship and subsequent break-up are still very rife.

McIlroy is the most recent member of the formerly loved-up duo to experience a cringe-worthy encounter. The 25-year-old was watching Ulster play Rugby Union, whilst also parading his recently-acquired golfing trophies, when he suffered a moment he might have hoped to avoid during a television interview.

He was talking about his great year when the famous song 'Sweet Caroline' by Neil Diamond was played over the tannoy. The crowd then proceeded to make matters worse by belting out in the section near to where the world no.1 was stood.

McIlroy took it in good faith by giggling and saying: "oh dear," but deep down - who knows how close to the surface it hit. Wozniacki's own love life has hit the headlines again recently, and perhaps that is what prompted the Ulster fans to embarrass her ex.

The Danish star, who reached just her second Grand Slam final this year at the US Open, has been romantically linked with another sports star: American Footballer, Ryan Kerrigan.

They were spotted at a Charity Dinner a few weeks ago, with witnesses saying they spent a large amount of time together throughout the evening. News has gone quiet on the potential relationship recently, however.

Hopefully this latest awkward moment will not derail the former world no.1 as she prepares for the new season. The 2015 season is due to start soon and Wozniacki must surely prey that this will be the year of her maiden Grand Slam title.

Her great friend, Serena Williams, stopped her in the Flushing Meadows final in the Autumn and the pair wiill hope that they do not have to stand in each other's way at such a crucial stage again.
