Arsene Wenger has named his strongest possible back five for the New Year's Day clash against Southampton, but might surprise some Arsenal supporters with his decision to deploy Calum Chambers in a more advanced midfield position against his old club.

The £16 million summer signing from the Saints will sit alongside Francis Coquelin in an unfamiliar defensive midfield pairing with Mathieu Flamini unavailable for today's game.

Lukas Podolski did not travel to the south coast with the Gunners squad, and with Olivier Giroud still suspended and Danny Welbeck injured it looks as though Alexis Sanchez will play the central striker role, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Santi Cazorla and the fit-again Tomas Rosicky in support.

On the bench, Wenger will be able to call upon Joel Campbell and Theo Walcott, who is still not deemed ready to feature from the start - that is expected to come in the FA Cup against Hull City at the weekend.

Defensive deputies in the form of Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal, while there is also places in reserve once again for emerging youngsters Chuba Akpom and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Starting line-ups

Southampton XI: Forster; Alderweireld, Fonte, Gardos, Bertrand; Wanyama, Davis; Ward-Prowse, Tadic, Mane; Pelle.

Subs: Davis, Yoshida, McCarthy, Targett, Isgrove, Reed, Long.

Arsenal XI: Szczesny, Debuchy, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Coquelin, Chambers, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Cazorla, Rosicky, Alexis.
