The first College Football Playoff final has been decided, Ohio State will face off with Oregon on January 12 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
After number two seed Oregon dominated number three seed Florida State in the Rose Bowl, number four seed Ohio State shocked number one seed Alabama in the Sugar Bowl to have a chance to be crowned champions.
Heisman trophy winner Marcus Mariota threw 338 yards for two touchdowns and one interception and led Oregon to a 59-20 win over reigning national champions Florida State.
Thomas Tyner had two rushing touchdowns and Daniel Carrington had two receiving touchdowns for Oregon.
Former Heisman winner Jameis Winston threw for 348 yards for one touchdown and one interception, but also had a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. Freshman running back Dalvin Cook had a poor performance with two key fumbles that allowed Oregon to capitalize and score two quick touchdowns.
It was a sad ending to the Seminoles season and it seems like Winston will leave FSU for the NFL Draft this spring. Oregon has continued to maintain a high octane offense like they have had for the past few years and it is the key to their recent successes.
Coming into this season redshirt sophomore Cardale Jones was the third string quarterback on the depth chart having lost his second string duties to J.T. Barrett. Then Braxton Miller suffered a season ending shoulder injury before the season started which made Jones backup to Barrett. Barrett played very well this year and led Ohio State to an 11-1 record before he broke his ankle against Michigan.
Jones had to step up quickly because the BIG 10 Conference Championship game was the following week. He stepped up in the big way and had an outstanding performance and helped Ohio State shut out Wisconsin 59-0.
Alabama, on the other hand had senior Blake Sims at quarterback and led Alabama to an 11-1 record and a #1 seed in the Playoffs. Both teams had very good defenses but Alabama's was considered superior. Alabama was the clear favorite in this game but the oddsmakers were wrong this time.
Alabama got off to a hot start and led Ohio State 21-6 late in the second quarter. That was before running back Ezekiel Elliot went off and ran over Alabama's defense. By halftime Ohio State was down by one point losing 20-21.
Blake Sims had three interceptions in this game, one of them was returned for a touchdown and by the end of the third Ohio State was winning 34-28. Elliot sealed the game when he had an 85 yard touchdown run late in the 4th to bring the score to 42-28. The final score was 42-35 and Ohio State booked their ticket to the final.
Elliot was the key offensive player and ran for 230 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns.
Cardale Jones had another very good game and converted many key third downs and kept Ohio State's offense running fluently. He finished with 243 yards and one touchdown with one interception off a miscommunication with his receiver.
Alabama has had some harsh luck in the Sugar Bowl, they have lost three straight games there including last year against Oklahoma. They will have to make many changes next year, as they will lose at least five or six players on offense and more on defense.
The final on the 12th will be an exciting matchup between two entertaining teams and we will then be able to find out who is the true champion of college football this season.
