It has officially been announced today that Bradley Wiggins has signed a contract extension with Team Sky until April 2015.

It is assumed that he will then turn his attentions to the track and attempt the prestigious hour record before preparing to compete in the team pursuit for Great Britain at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

In what has been one of the worst kept secrets in cycling, the 2012 Tour de France winner is expected to start up and ride for a development team - currently dubbed 'Team Wiggins'. This will consist of riders who want to focus on the track but also have the ability to compete during the road season with a look to a future road career.

Before Wiggins refocuses to the track later on in the year, the man from Kilburn will ride in the brutal Paris-Roubaix one day race as well as other punishing spring classics.

Wiggins announced on Team Sky's website  "Paris-Roubaix is a special race for me and I’m determined to give it another go in Team Sky colours.

"It’s one of the toughest races in the calendar and my aim is to improve on my ninth-place finish last year. After that I can focus fully on preparing for the Rio Olympics in 2016."

After an eventful career with Team Sky which included a disappointing start to a big financial commitment paid out by the team, followed by success at the 2012 Tour de France which coincided with a well publicised conflict with team mate Chris Froome throughout the past few seasons.

It looks as though this inevitable announcement will bring an end to a soap opera that has attracted attention from both within and outside the sport.
