Manchester United predicted XI vs Southampton

Football News

Manchester United are getting fit just in time to face fourth-placed Southampton at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils should start Michael Carrick and Angel di Maria in their lineup following injuries, while Luke Shaw is reportedly fit enough to play against his former-club.

That's good news for Louis van Gaal as Ashley Young will miss this one with a hamstring problem. Daley Blind is back in training but this game will probably come too soon for him, although Ander Herrera is back after coming through the FA Cup third round tie against Yeovil Town.

As for Southampton, Ronald Koeman said in his pre-match press conference that new signing Eljero Elia will be in the squad for the fixture. But the Dutch winger is not fully fit so should only play a limited role, if at all.

Nathaniel Clyne is recovered from the ankle knock that kept him out over the festive fixture list while Saints will wave goodbye to Sadio Mane and Maya Yoshida, who will be linking up with their respective international squads ahead of the Asian Cup and African Cup of Nations.

This clash sees third versus fourth, with Southampton this season's surprise package. In the reverse fixture last month, the Saints dominated their illustrious opponents, but two sucker punches from Robin van Persie stole the three points for Van Gaal's side.

There's been speculation that the Dutch striker may not start against the Saints, with Di Maria back Van Gaal may opt to push Wayne Rooney further forward.

That may mean one of Falcao or Van Persie drops out, and the Colombian is the striker in the better goalscoring form at the moment. As a result, that leads us to the predicted lineup.

Here's your predicted Manchester United XI for the game on Sunday…

De Gea, Rafael, Evans, McNair, Jones, Shaw, Di Maria, Carrick, Herrera, Falcao, Rooney
