WWE: The most shocking returns of 2014

There have been some shocking WWE returns in the past 12 months as some of the greatest former WWE superstars have graced the squared circle again.

Some honorable mentions have to go out to Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin and Edge who all returned to WWE this past year, they didn't compete in the ring but were all part of some of the biggest moments of the year.

Stone Cold and Hulk Hogan were a part of an historical opening to the biggest ever WrestleMania, whilst Edge was the main part of The Authority storyline and has even said that he will be returning to WWE some time in the future in a host or managerial person.

There were five returns that happened this year that were extraordinary and deserve to be looked back on again now, as the dust settles and we all prepare ourselves for the most surprising pay-per-view of the year!

5 - Batista

January 20th was etched in many WWE fans minds for weeks prior to the return of The Animal, he announced that he was going to be a part of The Royal Rumble and go on to headline WrestleMania 30.

Whilst he was at odds with former Evolution team mate Randy Orton due to these claims, he did go on to win The Royal Rumble but was forced to tap to the Yes Lock at WrestleMania when Daniel Bryan lifted the World Title for the first time and Batista then re-joined Evolution to take on The Shield.

Sadly Evolution proved that The Shield were the best stable in WWE and completed a clean sweep of Evolution at Payback which forced Batista to abandon his team mates and leave WWE once more.

4 - Chris Jericho

Y2J made his long awaited return to WWE back in June 2014 but he wasn't the only returnee that night. The Miz was out claiming how much of a big star he now was when Chris Jericho made his presence known and came down to the ring to his The Miz with the Codebreaker.

The two went on to have a feud that lasted a few weeks, before Bray Wyatt made his net target known and Jericho and Wyatt then embarked on a rivalry that would last for another few months and would put Bray over further with the fans before Jericho had his final match against Randy Orton at Night of Champions and walked away from WWE once more.

It is worth noting that Jericho has been working with WWE at live events over the past few months but opted not to be on TV and has also stated that he will not be involved in either the Royal Rumble or WrestleMania this year.

3 - Daniel Bryan

The leader of the Yes Movement and the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion was told that he may never wrestle again after the injury he suffered following Wrestlemania 30 last year.

That being said, the former Tag Team Champion bided his time and after The Authority were defeated at Survivor Series, their nemesis returned to gloat.

Bryan was appointed guest host by the mysterious Raw General Manager and he came down to the ring to force The Authority out and to chant "Yes" in the faces of the couple who doubted him.

Bryan then made his return to WWE a few weeks later on Raw to announce that he will be a part of the 2015 Royal Rumble match and was instantly tipped as the favourite. He will return to action on Thursday night as SmackDown moves to it's new home.

2 - The Undertaker

The Deadman returned to WWE in his usual slot to build up his match at WrestleMania 30. Brock Lesnar was not happy about the fact that he wasn't a part of the title match and so settled for taking on The Undertaker and his streak.

Undertaker was not impressed and returned to SmackDown to sign the contract for the match and in the process stabbed Brock Lesnar through the hand with a pen before chokeslamming him through the table.

The build up to the match saw Undertaker as dominant as ever but WrestleMania 30 saw the end of his streak when he was pinned by the Beast, that was the last time Undertaker was seen in WWE and it doesn't seem that he will be returning again any time soon.

1 - The Rock

The People's champion made a shocking Raw return back in October to confront both Lana and Rusev.

This for me was the most shocking return because it was the only one on the list that nobody saw coming. The Rock was the last person on anyone's mind to come out and finally silence Rusev, but that is exactly what he did.

After telling both Lana and Rusev what he and the WWE Universe thought of them, The Rock went on to beat Rusev down and throw him from the ring.

This was the most dominated Rusev had been during his time on the main roster of WWE and this started speculation that The Rock could be returning for a match with the Bulgarian. This is still yet to happen and The Rock hasn't returned to WWE since.

With the Royal Rumble just around the corner, there will be many shocking returns as superstars past and present take part in the 30-man over the top rope battle royal with the prize being a place in the Main Event of WrestleMania 31.
