Liverpool have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Ezequiel Lavezzi as Paris Saint-Germain have lined up Manchester United target Nicolas Gaitan as his replacement, according to the Express.
Lavezzi has been linked with a move away from the Ligue 1 outfit of late, and could now complete a move to Anfield sooner rather than later with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers looking to improve in the attacking department as his side go in search of climbing the table in the second half of the season.
Liverpool have endured a tricky campaign so far, and Lavezzi would no doubt improve them in the attacking department. And, at only £8 million, the Argentine international would prove quite the coup for the Merseyside club.
It appears, then, that Rodgers and Co. now stand a great chance of landing him in this window, as PSG are ready to make a move for Gaitan.
Gaitan, who is extremely highly rated in the world of football, has proved his credentials at Benfica of late, so it's not surprising that PSG boss Laurent Blanc wants to bring him to the club.
It won't be easy for the French money-bags to secure his signature, however, with Premier League giants Manchester United also interested in his services.
In fact, reports have indicated that Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal wants to bring him to the Theatre of Dreams in a £30 million deal in order to team him up with his international teammate Angel di Maria.
It remains to be seen as to whether United will press ahead with a move anytime soon, but they may well have to move quickly in order to move ahead of PSG in the race to land him.
Reds boss Rodgers will certainly be hoping that United miss out on Gaitan, as that could ultimately lead Lavezzi to Anfield.
For now, though, the Anfield manager will be concentrating on this weekend's Premier League schedule, as his side travel to Villa Park to take on Paul Lambert's struggling Aston Villa.
