Former World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso has applied for the vacant manager’s job at Hamilton Academical, reports the BBC.

The 37-year-old Italian is not without experience in the Scottish Premiership though after spending a season at Rangers in the 1997/98 campaign.

Winning 73 caps for his country, the central midfielder played an important part in Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning team.

Young manager

Since finishing his playing career at Swiss Super League side FC Sion in 2013 he went on to manage the Swiss club before taking the reins at Palermo and OFI Crete.

Since resigning his position in Greece amidst financial struggles he has applied for the managerial position at Scottish Premiership side Hamilton Academical.

Hart-set on a return to Scotland?

The position has been empty since player-manager Alex Neil left the Accies to take charge at Norwich City last week.

Former Celtic striker John Hartson is also reported to be interested in the vacancy at New Douglas Park.

The 39-year-old played 51 times for Wales and has played for Arsenal and West Ham but has no managerial experience.
