On a day where it became apparent Louis van Gaal would have a virtually unlimited bank balance in the summer virtue of Adidas’ new kit deal, a host of transfer rumours appeared to spring up focusing on the here and now.
If the gossip columns are to be believed then United fans have plenty to be optimistic about, with a number of top European stars linked with moves to Old Trafford in the coming weeks and months.
Van Gaal is known to be on the lookout for new recruits to improve a squad that already occupies third spot in the Premier League, and apparently only the best will do for the Dutchman as he bids to ensure mass financial outlay translates into on-pitch success.
The biggest story doing the rounds today focuses more succinctly on the speculation surrounding Van Gaal’s budget for the summer transfer window. With the Red Devils’ long relationship with Nike coming to an end at the culmination of the current campaign, they’re to receive a windfall of cash - approximately £750 million - from new sponsors Adidas.
This should ensure that there’s no player in the world that the former Premier League champions can’t afford, and yes that means Lionel Messi is a feasible target. The Argentina international might not end up moving on the grounds that he is happy at the Nou Camp, but Barcelona certainly won’t be able to refuse a sale outright if United come calling.
Next there’s the subject of Paris Saint-Germain youngster Marquinhos, with United said to have held preliminary talks over the possibility of signing him this month. The Brazilian centre-half is young but experienced, but there is a huge stumbling block for clubs looking to take him away from the Parc des Princes.
It’s believed PSG could ask for as much as £112 million for his services - obviously a vastly inflated amount - having only signed him last season from AS Roma. That’s sure to be enough to put anyone out the hunt, massive Adidas cash injection or no.
Yet without the doubt the juiciest news of the day centers around a supposed bid from United for the services of Juventus star Paul Pogba.
The midfielder, who left Old Trafford for regular game-time in 2012, has reportedly been the subject of a British record proposal from United, who have offered their Italian counterparts £61.5 million for his services. Now that’s commitment.
