The New Zealand under 20's hockey team have just found a way to make one of the most brutal and demanding sports even more awesome. No this is nothing to do with skill. They are an under 20's team and they're from New Zealand.
However, this video below takes everything hockey has going for it in terms of intensity and brings it out in what has to be the best pre-match entertainment hockey has ever seen.
Granted, this is not the first time the New Zealand under 20's have performed a war dance known as the haka, but it's most probably the first time diehard hockey fans have seen such an insane pre-match routine. The video below comes from New Zealand under 20's 5-1 defeat of South Africa this week.
There's something about the players doing the war dance on ice and with pads. It makes the whole scene even more momentous than when their fellow countrymen do the same in rugby.
Some fans have argued that the haka, a predominantly traditional rugby war dance, has no place in hockey and tarnishes the sport. This writer would have to disagree as it makes the game even more of a spectacle pre-game.
