Arsenal could make a move for Empoli defender Daniele Rugani before the close of the transfer window, according to the Daily Star.

It has been suggested that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is ready to continue to add to his squad, as he goes in search of improving in the defensive department in north London.

The report has revealed that Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista, so could make Rugani their third signing after previously landing Krystian Bielik earlier on this month.

It remains to be seen, however, as to whether the Gunners manage to pull off the deal in this January transfer window, with the player currently co owned by both Empoli and Italian giants Juventus.

Rugani future

There's no doubt about it, at just 20-years-old, the youngster looks set for a bright future in the game. At Empoli, Rugani has proved his credentials over the course of the campaign, so it's not a major surprise that Arsene Wenger and Co. are interested in securing his signature.

In fact, the defender has even been called up to the Italian national side in recent time, so he's certainly held in high regard.

Arsenal in need

Arsenal fans will no doubt be pleased that Arsene Wenger continues to identify defensive reinforcements, with his side having struggled at the back throughout the course of the season.

In fact, despite some solid displays, the Gunners have looked extremely vulnerable at the back for a while now, but will be hoping things improve sooner rather than later. After selling Thomas Vermaelen to La Liga giants Barcelona this past summer, Wenger's side have lacked defensive cover throughout this season.

For now, though, the Gunners will be concentrating on this weekend's clash with Aston Villa. They will be determined to continue their good run as they go in search of qualifying for next year's Champions League and fans will no doubt be expecting the club to secure all three points against Paul Lambert's side on Sunday as momentum continues to build in north London.
