Manchester United are keen to sign AC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The 30-year-old is out of contract in the summer and is set to be reunited with former Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, according to the Daily Star, who cite reports from Italy.
De Jong is free to discuss terms with overseas clubs and a pre-contract agreement could be put in place before the end of the current season.
Former Man City star
The Dutch holding midfielder has been with Milan since 2012, when he signed a three-year deal with the Rossoneri after leaving Manchester City.
De Jong won the FA Cup and a Premier League title during his three years with Manchester City before being allowed to leave the club by Roberto Mancini.
Fletcher, Anderson and Cleverley gone
A vastly experienced midfielder, De Jong - who has made 80 appearances for the Dutch national team - would be a useful replacement for Darren Fletcher, who brought an end to his 20-year association with Manchester United on Monday by signing a permanent deal with West Brom.
This leaves Manchester United with gaps to fill in their squad, and De Jong would be a cheap solution for the Premier League giants.
Kevin Strootman injury
It’s believed that Van Gaal is still keen to sign De Jong’s Dutch international teammate Kevin Strootman this summer, although that move is now in jeopardy with the AS Roma star now out of action with another knee injury.
De Jong would command far cheaper wages than Strootman, while the lack of transfer fee will also appeal to Manchester United.
However, it’s understood that Italian champions Juventus are also keeping a close eye on De Jong and could make a move for the former Ajax and Hamburg star before the start of the 2015-16 campaign.
