Olivier Giroud v Jan Vertonghen

Football News

It is surprising to think that people doubted Olivier Giroud when he moved from Montpellier in Ligue 1 to Arsenal in 2012. Like a lot of signings from the French leagues, the striker took a little time to find his feet but is now delighting Gunners fans with plenty of goals, hard work, and a touch of gallic flair which goes under the radar to a large extent.

He will come up against a Tottenham defence marshalled by the rejuvenated Jan Vertonghen. After a shocking 2013-14 (by his standards), Vertonghen has regained his focus under new manager Mauricio Pochettino and his performances have improved as a result. After a summer move to a major European team did not gravitate away from mere speculation, the big Belgium defender has formed a strong partnership with Federico Fazio.

It is that partnership that Giroud will look to test. Fazio has been impressive but always seems to have a ricket in him, and if the Arsenal No. 9 can elude Vertonghen and latch himself on to Fazio, he may have plenty of joy. If Vertonghen can stick to him, then we will see a great clash against two very good, if not world class, players.
