Manchester United have reacted to the emergence of new young star Saul Niguez by embarking on a campaign to use agent Jorge Mendes as a go-between in the hope of signing the player being dubbed as ‘the new Xabi Alonso’.

According to the Sun on Sunday, old Trafford scouts have been hugely impressed with the 20-year-old midfielder and club executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, is keen on adding the Atletico Madrid starlet to Louis van Gaal’s squad.

The report claims that Saul is about to join the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez is becoming one of the players represented by ‘super-agent’ Mendes. Manchester United’s interest started over a year ago and they could have signed the player at a far reduced fee is they had acted quickly enough.

Woodward had promising reports of the midfielder’s performances last season when on loan at Rayo Vallecano and, owing to a contract dispute with Atletico, United could have landed him for as little as £12million. However, the dispute was resolved and he has since signed a new deal.

That hasn’t put Manchester United off though, and the Red Devils have already showed they are prepared to spend big if the right player comes along. The report claims that a move for him will probably come this summer.

United’s interest in him will only have been further encouraged by the performance he put in during Atletico’s 4-0 rout of rivals Real Madrid at the weekend. Saul was called on from the bench early because of an injury to Koke – another highly-rated midfielder – and less than 10 minutes later he scored a nice bicycle kick to make it 2-0.
