Backstage workers at the WWE are angered with John Cena's new storyline that sees him being portrayed as an "old man veteran".
The 15-time champion is currently going up against the Pride of Putin, Rusev, in another one of Vince McMahon's favorites where the great American hope goes up against the evil Russian or Arab or anyone with an accent really. And we wonder why Vince is constantly called out of touch...
Anyway, in his new feud straight out of Rocky IV, Cena is the old man about to be crushed by Rusev. It's odd considering he literally just headlined the Royal Rumble and the backstage talk reveals the move has been met with a lot of criticism.
One person within WWE labeled it as "shockingly bad" as far as a direction for Cena's character and they couldn't understand what Cena is thinking going along with it, according to reports from The Wrestling Observer.
It does seem to be a very odd way to work him. Cena is still ludicrously over with the younger generation who gobble up his merchandise like candy. It would be odd to make him an old man as that seems so hard to translate to success with the kids.
Old School Oldies
The idea is to move Cena into a place similar to where Bruno Sammartino was in the 1970’s, in that he is the most popular name in the company, but the focus is on someone else who is up and coming, and at that time it was Bob Backlund.
But Sammartino wasn't 37 when he was moved into the old man role, he was 43 and had been the WWF Champion for an insane amount of time.
Brock Lesnar is the exact same age as John Cena and Vince is still using him as an indestructible force of nature that cannot be beaten or even injured by other top superstar's finishers.
Dolph Ziggler is 34 and the WWE haven't even given him his chance at the top yet. That shows how ludicrous the concept is, but i'm the fool here for trying to make sense out of anything that Vince McMahon does.
So WWE fans what do you think, is this a terrible direction from Cena to go in or are you hopeful for this change? Tell us in the comments below...
