Jamie Redknapp hails Chelsea for David Luiz deal

Football News

Liverpool legend Jamie Redknapp has insisted that someone at Chelsea deserves a knighthood for selling flamboyant Brazilian ace David Luiz for £50 million this past summer.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, the Sky Sports pundit has insisted that the Blues struck a fine piece of business by offloading Luiz and replacing him with the duo of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas.

In fact, Redknapp has insisted that the Stamford Bridge outfit have improved this term despite Luiz now plying his trade in Paris.

Chelsea, of course, came up against the Brazilian for the first time last night as Jose Mourinho's side secured a 1-1 draw in the Parc des Princes, and Redknapp has criticised the former Chelsea man for a below-par performance.

Speaking about the Luiz deal, Redknapp said: "Whoever struck the deal to sell David Luiz for £50million deserves a knighthood.

"That fee allowed Chelsea to buy Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas and improve.

"Some of Luiz’s sweeping passes were Hoddle-like but when he has a responsibility to defend, he lets his team down.

"Look at how he let Branislav Ivanovic run off him for Chelsea’s goal."

In the balance

Mourinho and Co. will certainly be satisfied with the draw in France, but the tie still seems to be in the balance ahead of the second leg. Laurent Blanc's side certainly proved they have the capabilities to hurt Chelsea, but the Blues will no doubt expect to qualify for the quarter-finals on home soil.

With the likes of Costa, Eden Hazard, Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all in line to feature at the Bridge, goals will be expected once again. It looks set to be quite the showdon.

Redknapp's right

There's no doubt about it, the majority of Chelsea fans will agree with Redknapp's comments as Luiz has shown inconstancies throughout his career. Fabregas and Costa, on the other hand, have enjoyed fine debut seasons at the Bridge as the club go in search of success.

The Blues look stronger the ever and they certainly aren't missing Luiz. Mourinho's side should feee confident ahead of the return leg at the Bridge. Expect Fabregas and Costa to outshine Luiz back on English soil.
