Liverpool are keeping an eye on the situation regarding Barcelona ace Adriano, and could make a move to convince the Catalan giants to sell in the summer, according to reports.
The 30-year-old Brazilian has struggled for game-time under Luis Enrique at the Nou Camp and has found himself largely on the periphery of the first-team squad. As such his future has come under scrutiny recently, and Brendan Rodgers is hardly inundated with world-class full-backs.
The Daily Mirror report that Liverpool are keeping tabs on developments, with Adriano perhaps open to offers come the summer as he seeks first-team football. Capable of playing in a host of positions, including midfield, the former Sevilla man has been with Barca for four seasons, and has racked up a total of 159 first-team appearances in all competitions across that period.
Yet having featured just eight times in La Liga this term he’s found himself relatively frozen out, and although the future of right-back Dani Alves looks likely to be settled by his departure this summer, there doesn’t look like a space opening up for him anytime soon.
Premier League switch?
Therefore a move to the Premier League could be an option, with former teammates Alex Song and Francesc Fabregas having excelled there since their respective returns.
Adriano’s release clause is said to stand at £15 million but it’s thought that just over half that figure would be enough for Barca to agree to offload him. At £7 million the experienced defender could be a bargain, and he’d certainly give Rodgers more options in both the back-line and the centre of midfield.
It's set to be a summer of drastic change at Anfield, what with Steven Gerrard finally leaving the club for the MLS. As a result calm heads will be needed to smooth the transition, and Rodgers could do far worse than a player who has managed to retain a spot in Barcelona’s squad since 2010.
Of course the situation could change yet if Luis Enrique finds himself out of a job. The ex-Barca player started off the season by producing a string of good results, but since then the title challenge seems to have somewhat stalled, and rumours of dressing room friction between himself and star man Lionel Messi have hardly helped matters.
The weekend’s shock 1-0 loss to Malaga allowed Real Madrid to extend their lead at the top of La Liga to four points, and with just one El Clasico remaining Barca are relying on Carlo Ancelotti’s side to drop points if they’re to catch them up. Winning the Champions League could be the only way for him to save his skin, and if a replacement is brought in it could mean Adriano’s future changes.
