WWE: Early favourites for the Andre the Giant memorial battle royal

Football News

This past week on Monday Night Raw in a backstage segment, The Miz confirmed that the Andre the Giant memorial battle royal will return at this year’s WrestleMania XXXI event and announced his intention to enter and win the battle royal.

As the pay-per-view draws nearer, three superstars are already locked in for the match and there are plenty of other superstars who will follow them in the coming weeks.

The Miz, Ryback and Curtis Axel are already confirmed for the match and with more superstars yet to be added it will be interesting to see who the WWE books to win this year. Especially since Cesaro’s big win in the match last year didn’t work wonders with him as everyone expected.

Last year Cesaro competed in the pre-show and then on the main card where he threw The Big Show over the top rope, now he’s the WWE Tag Team Champion so it looks unlikely that he will enter the match let alone retain the crown.

There are a number of stars who I think are sure to compete in the match and stand a genuine chance of walking out with the impressive trophy.

Curtis Axel announced his intentions to enter the match this past week on Monday Night Raw and was still reeling following his non-elimination from the Royal Rumble, where he never even entered. At first the ‘Axelmania’ looked like it was going to remain an online trend by Curtis Axel but with the merchandise it looks as if the WWE could be moving forward with it.

Axel is a solid worker in the ring and even though he isn’t the most interesting of superstars he probably is one of the favourites to win this battle royal, using the Royal Rumble as motivation. His run as a Paul Heyman guy was more hype and very little substance even though he held the Intercontinental Championship, but perhaps the WWE might put a little but more faith in Axel this time and hand him the trophy especially with the weight of being the son of Mr. Perfect he really needs another big achievement.

The Miz was the first superstar to announce his spot in the battle royal and having a WrestleMania moment isn’t new to him, having a main event victory over John Cena to his name so he’s used to pressure situations and being one of the most talented on the microphone and one of the best in-character, The Miz has to be considered a favourite.

Cesaro received a great reaction when he had his WrestleMania moment in great fashion, but The Miz is someone who could steal the win at the last second in cheap fashion, where he stays a natural heel and does what he does best. He’s worked well under his current movie star gimmick and he’d love to get his hands on a trophy to rub in the fans faces.

If Damien Mizdow enters this match also then he’ll be a favourite amongst the WWE Universe. Even as The Miz’ personal assistant he continues to receive a great reaction on a weekly basis and there’s only so much the WWE can do with him before he snaps and takes a big win from The Miz and that could happen in this match.

It would be great to see Mizdow play an important role in the result of this match and you can already imagine the reaction from the fans in attendance if it comes down to The Miz and Damien Mizdow, even though The Miz will order him to leave the ring Mizdow could disobey him and have his own WrestleMania moment and who knows, maybe the WWE will realise that he has the talent to be a great star and give him a serious push.

Ryback is another who is confirmed for this match and regardless of any other superstar who declares his attention to enter the match, Ryback will always be a favourite. It looks as if the WWE are going to keep building Ryback up as a face and even though it will take something big for him to enter the title picture again, a victory in this match is certainly a step in the right direction.

There were reports that Ryback was going to team with Dolph Ziggler at the event but with Daniel Bryan and the Intercontinental Championship potential possibilities for Ziggler, Ryback could play a big role in this match. If the remainder of 2015 is to be big for Ryback, then he needs to dominate in this match and do it in style, and hopefully make the trophy relevant.

Sheamus is yet to return to the WWE even though the vignettes promoting his return have been airing for a few weeks. The fans want Sheamus to return as a heel and if he does then Daniel Bryan is a possibility, but if the WWE go ahead with Dolph Ziggler vs Daniel Bryan then this match would be the perfect moment for Sheamus to return.

The WWE would want Sheamus to be in the main event picture upon his return and if he returns at WrestleMania in this match and not before it, his alignment probably won’t matter. The victory would be very big for him and he’s a superstar who could bring some relevancy to the trophy.

Last year Swagger broke Cesaro’s trophy after the break-up of The Real Americans and now that Swagger is a face and receives a great reaction from the fans, an American winning the award would be welcomed by the fans in attendance. Swagger has fallen down the ladder of relevancy a little ever since Zeb Colter went off-screen but a win in this match could elevate him a little bit more.
