Manchester United defender Tyler Blackett is on the verge of signing a new two-and-a-half year contract, despite falling back down the pecking order in recent months.

Blackett has made 10 first-team appearances this season after a surprise rise through the ranks, thanks to a combination of injury problems at the start of the season and the faith of Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman clearly thinks Blackett has potential, with Northern football correspondent for The Times James Ducker reporting that he's in line for a whopping 1000% pay rise that takes him from £2000-a-week to £20,000 overnight.

Blackett the latest to commit long-term future

Blackett is ready to follow the example set by Paddy McNair and Jesse Lingard in recent weeks, by signing a deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2017.

Van Gaal has been impressed by all three and first took a shine to Blackett on the club's tour of America last summer, deciding that the commanding, pacy young central defender has enough promise to warrant his time and attention.

United still need a top-class defender

United have decided that both Blackett and McNair have a long-term future at the Theatre of Dreams, but their development can't come at the expense of spending big on a world-class centre-back this summer.

The Red Devils have looked desperately short of leadership at key times in that area at various points of the campaign, with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans failing to take their opportunity to shine in truth.

Regulars at Old Trafford are still pining for the kind of authority and leadership provided Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic for the best part of a decade, but players of that class aren't widely available.

It promises to be an interesting summer for United in terms of ins and outs in defence, but Blackett is one youngster that's definitely staying put for next season and beyond.
