Various WWE superstars have started to eye up the Intercontinental Championship which is held by Bad News Barrett and the WWE have confirmed that the title will be defended at WrestleMania 31.

Barrett retained the gold at the WWE Fastlane pay-per-view after defeating Dean Ambrose via disqualification but The Lunatic Fringe didn’t take the defeat lying down, leaving the arena with the championship and refusing to give it back the following night on Monday Night Raw.

The altercation also involved Dolph Ziggler as well as R-Truth on commentary, Barrett did manage to get his championship title back, but for how long?

It was always obvious that the Intercontinental Championship would be defended at WrestleMania, and it was thought that the fans might see a direct rematch of Fastlane where Dean Ambrose gets another shot at taking the championship from Bad News Barrett.

Before Thursday Night SmackDown went on air, the WWE made a huge announcement on their Facebook page as well as their app announcing a breaking news alert.

They announced that Barrett will defend the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 31 in a multi-man ladder match.

The post read:

“BREAKING NEWS: Intercontinental Champion Bad News Barrett will defend his title against multiple WWE Superstar opponents in a Ladder Match on the Grandest Stage in Entertainments, WWE WrestleMania 31, LIVE Sunday, March 29 at 8e/5p on WWE Network. #31to31.”

As of now the WWE haven’t announced anyone with Barrett being the only name announced but more names are expected be announced in the coming weeks, but the WWE have already provided hints as to who could be involved in the match.

Dean Ambrose is already a guarantee, he had one chance at the championship at Fastlane and failed before stealing the championship. The storyline will continue and Ambrose will add a lot of entertainment to a ladder match with his gimmick and his history of violence prior to joining the WWE.

R-Truth is another superstar who will probably be added to this match, he has a pin-fall victory over Barrett and campaigned to get a match on Monday Night Raw, managing to get #GiveTruthAChance trending worldwide on Twitter. He played a role on SmackDown as well, stealing the championship and handing it back over to Ambrose.

The fact that the WWE are still using R-Truth in the storyline suggests they will look to him to add some experience in the ladder match at WrestleMania 31.

The WWE will probably use this ladder match as an opportunity to replace the Money in the Bank ladder match the event used to host, and six participants is the perfect number to keep this match fast-paced and entertaining.

If Ambrose and R-Truth do end up joining Barrett in the match then there are already three names that stick out who could play a huge role. Dolph Ziggler was nudged by Ambrose on Raw and he could be inserted into this match and could receive a great reaction.

More hints were dropped on SmackDown as well, Daniel Bryan got involved in this storyline and the WWE might opt to scrap the rumoured Daniel Bryan vs Dolph Ziggler/Sheamus match and throw the two into this, adding a lot of experience and entertainment.

The returning Sheamus would also fit well into this, he always steps it up in the ladder matches and is used to pressure situations, the WWE have six talented stars right in front of them to steal the show at WrestleMania 31.
