We begin in the NFL where Australian Rugby League star Jarryd Hayne has signed a futures deal with the San Francisco 49ers. The 27-year-old had been expected to sign with the Detroit Lions as he bids to make the transition from one of NRL’s most respected players to an NFL roster, but the $100,000 guaranteed by the 49ers clearly had an influence. Elsewhere in the league the Houston Texans have given wide receiver Andre Johnson permission to seek a trade. The veteran has spent 12 seasons with the franchise but is looking for a new challenge after learning his role was set to change. Across to the NBA and the Chicago Bulls have been dealt another injury blow. Not long after losing Derrick Rose, the franchise has learnt that All-Star Jimmy Butler is to be sidelined for between three and six weeks. Finally, in college basketball Iowa State mounted the comeback of the night – erasing a 21-point deficit to beat Oklahoma 77-70.
