Mohamed Salah may have struggled to make his mark in English football with Chelsea, but the Egyptian winger is rebuilding his career at Fiorentina and has been voted January’s best Serie A signing.

Fans were voting for their favourite New Year addition via a poll in Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, with the 22-year-old coming out on top after a string of impressive performances for Vincenzo Montella’s Champions League-chasing side.

However the results of the poll have made for grim reading for German international Lukas Podolski, who finished second-bottom of the list having struggled at Inter Milan since signing from Arsenal two months ago.

Spectacular Salah

Salah has filled the void left by Juan Cuadrado’s exit to Stamford Bridge, and is now producing on a regular basis whilst his Columbian counterpart battles to force his way into Jose Mourinho’s starting 11.

He has already found the net four times in his new surroundings, and was on the scoresheet twice in four days as Tottenham Hotspur were eliminated from the Europa League and Inter were put to the sword on the domestic front.

The Egyptian international led the way with 48.4% of the votes, finishing way ahead of second-placed Xherdan Shaqiri who convinced 19.7% of readers he was the signing of the window after swapping Bayern Munich for Inter.

Manolo Gabbiadini and Maxi Lopez made up the rest of the top four after winter moves to Napoli and Torino, but still came way adrift of the sensational Salah.

Flop signings

That Podolski, whose bridges now appear burned forever in North London after a parting feud with Arsene Wenger, came second-lowest in the poll is indicative of the German international’s growing plight.

Though never a regular his time at the Emirates Stadium did see him help the Gunners lift the FA Cup, yet he was allowed to leave after falling down the pecking order at the club after the arrival of Danny Welbeck from Manchester United in the summer.

Alessio Cerci was actually voted the worst signing, with the former Torino winger enduring a torrid first month with AC Milan. He was one of the worst players in La Liga at Atletico Madrid, and despite Diego Simeone cutting his losses on the Italian a move to the San Siro has yet to bear fruit.

Seydou Doumbia and Suso were the third and fourth worth signings of the window, with the latter a peculiar signing after suffering a torrid time at Liverpool and failing to ever truly showcase his abilities to the world of football.
