Manchester United fans blasted defender Jonny Evans on Twitter last night after the player released an official statement insisting that he didn't spit on Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse.
Video footage appeared to show the Northern Irishman spitting in the direction of Cisse, however Evans has completely denied the accusations, suggesting that he was 'totally surprised' by the claims from the media.
However, Evans' statement hasn't stopped the Manchester United faithful from slamming him, with many calling on him to leave the club in near future.
It appears, then, that the club's supporters have seen enough of the 27-year-old after a number of inconsistent displays over the course of the past year or so.
Evans has failed to hold down a starting place throughout the course of the season, but it remains to be seen as to whether Red Devils chief Louis van Gaal will look to move him on anytime soon.
This latest incident could in fact see him banned after the FA charged him and Cisse over the allegation. The defender could miss as many as six games, but has until 6pm this evening to respond to the charge.
A six game ban would certainly do him no favours as he goes about making a success of himself under the Van Gaal regime, but it's certainly not looking good for him.
Perhaps it's time
In truth, Evans' time as a Manchester United player could be running out. Ultimately, he has failed to prove his credentials for the club on a consistent basis for some time, as he's failed to maintain his fitness.
He's also prone to an error, which certainly hasn't helped his cause, and Van Gaal will surely be looking to strengthen in his back-line this summer as United go in search of improvement.
After the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic left the club at the end of the David Moyes era, it appeared that this season would be Evans' perfect chance to prove his credentials, but things just haven't worked out for him.
Unfortunately, despite now being one of the more senior figures in the club's defence, Evans has failed to kick on this term, and he may well pay the price this summer.
