Chelsea have yet to offer Branislav Ivanovic a new deal to keep him at Stamford Bridge, despite the fact that Real Madrid’s interest in signing him is continuing to rise.
According to the Daily Mail, who directly contrast reports in the past few days that have suggested Chelsea are in negotiations with the Serbian right-back, Ivanovic hasn’t been handed terms. Jose Mourinho has already spoken out over how important he sees the 31-year-old and the player’s form this campaign has been sensational, but it looks as though a decision is yet to be made.
Situation uncertain
At the moment his future is unclear and although Chelsea do intend to offer him a contract it will most likely be a one-year deal with the option of another twelve months after that. That alone might be enough to convince the ageing right-back to consider other options, with both Real and long-time suitors Paris Saint-Germain waiting to see how the situation unfolds.
Of course losing Ivanovic would be a scenario Mourinho won’t want to contemplate. The Special One depends upon his defender as one of the most experienced and reliable heads within the Chelsea squad, and it’s believed that he has ushered a personal plea for Stamford Bridge chiefs to be forthcoming with a proposal.
Possibilities
If Ivanovic is handed a new deal then he’ll be the next senior squad member to have his immediate future clarified, with Mourinho all but having confirmed captain John Terry will get a 12 month extension come the summer.
Though the long-term plans for Petr Cech remain shrouded in uncertainty - it’s yet to be made clear whether he’ll leave the club this summer - fans will appreciate such decisions being made, as the old guard are an important part of the team.
Until such a time as Ivanovic has put pen to paper though Blues fans will be forced to worry, with both Real and PSG also boasting considerable financial might. Neither team has an un-droppable player in the Serbian’s favoured right-back position and his consistent defensive displays have been joined this year by mature performances going forward.
