Chelsea defender Filipe Luis could make a surprise early return to former club Atletico Madrid this summer, just 12 months after swapping the Spanish capital for Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £16 million.
Luis arrived with a reputation as one of the most consistent attacking full-backs in European football, but has struggled to earn a regular place in Jose Mourinho's side in his first season with Chelsea.
The 29-year-old has only started eight Premier League games this term, which is one reason why The Telegraph report that Atletico are monitoring his situation closely with a view to a bid when the current campaign concludes.
Azpilicueta's form the main problem
Luis was widely expected to hold down the left-back slot at Chelsea this season, but Cesar Azpilcueta continues to be nothing short of excellent week-in, week-out and that has limited the Brazilian's game time considerably.
One school of thought is that Branislav Ivanovic will see his responsibilities reduced and Azpilicueta will move to right-back next season, but Luis turns 30 during the close season and can hardly afford to wait and see if that shift does take place and work in his favour for next season.
Would Mourinho let him go?
Mourinho is looking to strengthen his defence this summer rather than lose any key players, but may be forced to consider letting Luis go if he voices serious concerns over his status in West London.
The Blues boss will have to offer his lower-profile acquisition from Atletico some assurances over further chances to shine if he wants him to stay long-term, that much is clear.
Chelsea have barely made a mis-step in the transfer market since Mourinho took his place back in the Bridge dugout, but perhaps Luis will prove to be a rare blip despite having obvious qualities.
Azpilicueta has already effectively claimed once victim in Ashley Cole during his time with the Premier League leaders, he's well on course to do the same again as Atletico consider an emotional return to the Vicente Calderon for one of Diego Simeone's favourite players.
