Benfica youngster Balde gets Panenka penalty horribly wrong

It's a good thing that ridicule never killed anyone, because if it did, Benfica's youth winger Balde would be long gone.

The player stepped up to take the seemingly decisive spot kick during his side's quarter-final clash against Shakhtar Donetsk and instead of smashing the ball home with his side already 1-0 up, he decided to take the finesse approach by opting for an audacious Panenka.


Unfortunately for the youngster, the shot had neither the desired power or height to trouble a baffled Shakhtar keeper and Benfica ended up crashing out of the UEFA youth league quarter-finals on, would you believe it, penalties. It seems that what comes around goes around after all... 

Judging from the fluffed and pathetic result, its fair to say that Balde has a lot to learn from finesse master Andrea Pirlo in the matter. 

Final nerves

Zinedine Zidane pulled off perhaps the most audacious Panenka penalty of all time in the World Cup final back in 2006, chipping the ball into the net while leaving Gianluigi Buffon grasping at thin air. Balde would have done well to study the video and see how it should be done...
