PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay has told Manchester United he's desperate to join them this summer, in an effort to speed up transfer talks between the two clubs over a deal thought to be worth in the region of £22 million.
That is according to Goal.com correspondent Greg Stobart, who cites sources in a report which claims strong progress has been made in negotiations between United, PSV and Depay's representatives over the last few weeks.
Depay has plenty of suitors including Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, but strongly favours a move to Old Trafford because of a strong working relationship with Louis van Gaal that dates back to last summer's World Cup.
United in the driving seat to sign Depay
Van Gaal gave Depay his chance to sign for Holland and also trusted him to make an impact in Brazil last summer, despite having more experienced options available.
Having the former Netherlands boss in charge plus close links with the management group which looks after Depay's career makes United overwhelming favourites to sign the 21-year-old, one of the most exciting, raw young talents in European football.
Depay would offer United something different
There's no question that United's squad needs a fresh injection of attacking impetus over the summer, despite being unproven at the very highest level Depay could well be the man to provide just that.
Depay has scored a fantastic 22 goals in 33 matches across all competitions this season, helping PSV build an unassailable 11-point lead at the top of Eredivise.
The time has come for Depay to move on and challenge himself in a top European league though, which is something United are well placed to do in search of a versatile new option when the current campaign concludes.
